World Hindu Council of America (VHPA) presented MALAVIKAGNIMITRAM, a Broadway style romantic musical performance based on the epic drama by Mahakavi Kalidas. The play was presented by Dhaatu Puppet Theatre and directed by Anupma Hoskere. The play used an interesting combination of live performers and puppetry. For non-Hindi audience, commentary in English will be provided.
This event was organized to raise funds for the “SUPPORT A CHILD” project.
Malvikaagnimitram is believed to be Kalidas’s very first lyrical drama. It tells the story of the love of Agnimitra, the Shunga Emperor at Vidisha, for Malavika, the beautiful maiden of his chief queen. He must resort to the help of his jester and playa game of subterfuge merely to look at the girl. When the queen discovers her husband’s passion for this girl, she becomes infuriated and has Malavika imprisoned. But as fate would have it, it is found that Malavika is of royal birth, and is eventually accepted by the queen as her equal.
